I believe that God created all people with some basic needs which would ultimately draw people back to Him. I was on a mission trip in France one time and I was really trying to figure out what it was that these French people needed that makes them unique and how we could use that to plant a church. At some point during my prayer time on that trip I sensed God saying to me that in all their uniqueness He created all people with the same basic needs of Relationship, Purpose, and Hope. It helped me to understand John 10:10 better. The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I came that you might have live and have it to the full.
During a business trip in 2009 my family visited Baltimore. While we were there we connected with a church and began to drive 10hrs round trip once or twice a month on weekends for almost 2 years. I had always thought I might plant a church in a suburban environment somewhere, but during that time I really found a connection to the tough and broken people of this city.
Baltimore is famous as the home of Edgar Allen Poe and the location where Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangles Banner. It serves as the childhood home to Babe Ruth, home to the 2014 Superbowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, and home to the famous Camden Yards, Cal Ripken and the Baltimore Orioles. If you’ve played Monopoly you might be familiar with the B & O Railroad. Yep, that’s the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. But Baltimore also ranks 6th in the nation in violent crime and is known as the U.S. Heroin capital. It’s a city of addiction where streets of boarded up row houses make for a perfect backdrop for the HBO special “The Wire” where drugs, police, and political corruption paint a depressing picture of the city. In this city less than 8% of the people have any affiliation with an evangelical church and more churches are closing their doors each year. But all of this depravity has one simple answer; Jesus.
There are disconnected, broken, and addicted people everywhere, and our experience indicates that they want help if we will offer it and walk with them on the journey. When we do that, they are able to find Relationship, Purpose, and Hope through Jesus and can begin living the full life he offers.
We Life Church Baltimore to be a place where people can see the gospel lived out in the life of transformed believers, where they can hear the gospel message clearly communicated in a culturally relevant way, and were they will experience lasting LIFE-change through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, “The thief comes to steal kill and destroy, but I came that you might have life and have it to the full.”
The thief lives in Baltimore.
